Frank Bourree receives Chamber Governors’ Award of Distinction
VICTORIA, B.C. – Always a leader, it is no surprise that Frank Bourree has the distinction of being the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce's first recipient of the Governors' Award of Distinction.
“Frank is a long-time colleague and good friend. I couldn’t agree more with our Governors, who chose Frank to receive this award,” Chamber CEO Bruce Williams says. “Frank’s commitment to the tourism sector and his work on economic development are second to none. If there was an award for top dad and grandfather, he would be contender for that one too.”
Now retired, Bourree is well-known in our region as a co-founder of GT Hiring Solutions and Chemistry Consulting Group. The companies shaped our region by providing employment services to people most in need, and tracking data that helped the tourism industry tell its story through statistics.
“Over the many years we’ve known each other, Frank has always been gracious with his time. He continues to volunteer on numerous boards and has spent countless hours patiently offering career guidance to anyone in need of advice,” Chamber Chair John Wilson says. “Congratulations Frank!”
Bourree served as chair of the Greater Victoria Chamber from 2014-15. During his term he was passionate about local government engagement, and spearheaded an effort to get digital access to local council meetings as well as vote tracking. Frank is also a collaborator. In his time on the board, he worked with staff to bring together key regional stakeholders to optimize $1.3 million from Western Economic Diversification Canada to promote our region as a desirable place to learn, play and do business.
The Governors' Award of Distinction, sponsored by the Times Colonist, is a re-imagining of the Lifetime Achievement Award. The Award of Distinction recognizes a business person who has contributed to a prosperous community through leadership and vision. Criteria includes having served as a positive role model in the business community, and a long-time association with The Chamber.
In December, John Espley was announced as Chamber Member of the Year for 2021.
The 2021 Business Awards feature 14 categories recognizing businesses that distinguished themselves in many ways, including excellent customer service, sustainable business practices, emerging professionals and non-profit association of the year. If you know of hard-working entrepreneurs, business people and community leaders who were able to rise above the uncertainty of the pandemic, we encourage you to nominate them at victoriachamber.ca. Individuals and organizations can also nominate themselves. Nominations close Jan. 25.
Winners will be determined by an independent panel of prominent business leaders who will serve as judges. The Chamber's 2021 Business Awards will be broadcast on CHEK TV at 6 pm, May 15. Last year’s show reached 50,000 viewers.
Since 1863, The Chamber has served Greater Victoria by working together to build good business and great community through advocacy, networking, professional development and innovative services as changing times require. In 2020, the Chamber Champions initiative added a powerful resource to provide leadership and guidance to our organization. Chamber Champions step up to lead the way to better times
VICTORIA, B.C. – The pandemic has challenged all of us to rethink our lives and the way we do business. As the economy faces an uneven recovery, there is still plenty of work needed to make sure all of us get through this together. The Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce, as with many non-profit organizations, also faced uncertainty over the last nine months.
“We are truly grateful for support received from the community, the media and all of our members — especially our Chamber Champions,” Chamber CEO Bruce Williams says of the initiative he launched this year to create a new, highly-engaged echelon of membership. The program is designed to connect business and community leaders through vigorous dialogue and strategic discussions with the goal of building resilience as the regional economy recovers.
“The Champions are a powerful resource for the community and Chamber members,” Williams says. “This type of leadership is more important now than at any other time in our organization’s 157-year history. The Chamber has worked hard to advocate on behalf of business, and I’m proud we have been able to make a difference and help many people get through this difficult time. We couldn’t do it without support, and the Chamber Champions represent a commitment to helping businesses continue to be the backbone of our community. Exceptional times call for exceptional leadership, just as these Champions are offering.”
“He is one of the strongest supporters of The Chamber I’ve ever met,” says Agilus Work Solutions’ Branch Manager Rose Arsenault, who nominated Espley and was herself Chamber Member of the Year for 2019. “John is always positive, always sharing information about the organization. He believes in the value of being a member and is always singing the praises of Chamber activities and advocacy efforts.”
The initial launch of the Chamber Champions includes 10 organizations: Big Wheel Burger, CHEK News, CIBC, Kinetic Construction, Knappett Projects, MNP, RBC, Seaspan, TELUS and the University of Victoria.

VICTORIA, B.C. – John Espley has been named Chamber Member of the Year for 2021 by the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce.
“John is someone that knows everyone, He’s a familiar face at Chamber mixers and was one of the people who helped make our virtual events so successful this year,” says John Wilson, chair of The Chamber’s Board of Directors. “We’re delighted to recognize John for his support and I look forward to celebrating with him in 2021, as we continue working to rebuild and add resilience to Greater Victoria’s economy.”
Espley is a vocal champion of The Chamber and has been involved with the organization since the 1990s. Currently the Chief Connector for Connection Skills, Espley served as Chair of The Chamber’s Board of Directors in 2007. He is now a member of the Chamber’s Board of Governors.

Stronger BC for Everyone: BC’s Economic Recovery Plan ‘a good start’
VICTORIA, B.C. – The Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce is encouraged by some of the policies revealed yesterday by the provincial government’s $1.5 billion Economic Recovery Plan. However, there is still a lot that needs to happen before we will be able to say that the announced programs will be effective in helping the businesses in our region that continue to struggle.
“It’s encouraging to hear Premier John Horgan and Finance Minister Carole James indicate that further relief dollars are forthcoming. The key with the announcements made yesterday will be rolling out these programs quickly and efficiently,” Chamber CEO Bruce Williams says. “Businesses are by no means out of the woods, and many will need help to survive until next spring. We will continue working with our members and to call on government to prioritize programs that stabilize and provide liquidity for businesses.”
The plan included a number of highlights that align with The Chamber’s ongoing advocacy efforts. A $300 million program to provide grants for businesses with two to 149 employees will help employers keep staff over the short term. A further $100 million in infrastructure spending is expected to jumpstart a number of projects around the province that are ready to get underway.
Government also heard The Chamber’s call for tax reform, and the plan includes $600 million in new incentives such as a 100 per cent PST rebate on certain types of equipment. A 15 per cent tax credit on new payroll will also help businesses that need to hire more workers.
There is also money for short-term training, which will be vital to helping employers fill positions that have been created by ongoing demands on health care and child care.
“We have been consistent with our call for immediate skills upgrading and micro-credential offerings to benefit workforce shortages that were obvious before COVID, and to create more stable employment for unskilled low earning workers who have been displaced by the pandemic,” Williams says.
The Chamber is thankful that government acknowledged the difficult times facing the tourism sector, but the package announced yesterday falls short of what the industry hoped to receive.
“Businesses that serve the tourism industry are vital to Greater Victoria’s economy, and I’m not sure how many will be able to make it to spring with the programs being offered,” John Wilson, chair of The Chamber’s Board of Directors, says. “The $50 million for a tourism task force does offer some hope that more funding will be coming to support a sector that’s been hit harder than any other during this pandemic. Hopefully further funding announcements will address this.”

Bruce Williams named new CEO of The Chamber
Community connections vital to sparking economic recovery in Greater Victoria
VICTORIA, B.C. – The Board of Directors of the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce has selected Bruce Williams to become the organization’s next CEO, effective June 15.
John Wilson, chair of The Chamber’s Board of Directors, says Williams was chosen after a rigorous process that examined an extensive list of candidates from across Canada.
“Bruce has proven himself as a highly capable leader in Greater Victoria. We’re delighted he’s agreed to take the helm at The Chamber as we work to restart our economy after a very challenging time,” Wilson says. “Bruce is well-known and trusted as someone who cares deeply about our community. He’s also had tremendous success connecting with people in business and government, which will be vital in his new role at The Chamber.”
Williams had been serving as interim CEO of the South Island Prosperity Partnership, which evolved from an economic development committee that originated with The Chamber. He is co-owner of the Spark Strategic Group and has served as a business executive with Bell Media and as a broadcast producer, on-air host and television anchor with CTV.
“I want to recognize the exemplary and inspired leadership created by Catherine Holt over the past four years,” Williams said. “Catherine crafted an efficient, effective and extremely influential organization. She along with current and past Chamber board members and staff should be proud of the organization they have formed.
“Recognizing the current state of our economy due to the COVID-19 crisis, I feel The Chamber can remain strong and resilient as we work with and support small, medium and large businesses. Greater Victoria has always been a strong, healthy, sustainable and inclusive community and I’m proud to be assuming this role to engage us all with our new economy.”
Williams will take over from current Chamber CEO Catherine Holt, who announced she was moving on from the role in January.
“Of course, at that time we had no inkling we would soon be facing unprecedented economic turmoil caused by a global pandemic,” Holt says. “Fortunately for The Chamber, we have been able to build a small but mighty team that has proven it can rise to the occasion. With Bruce’s exceptional skills as a communicator, I can’t think of a better organization to help Greater Victoria get through this challenge. We have the foundation for one of the most robust economies in Canada, and I look forward to the day when all businesses can thrive once again.”

During these extraordinary times, The Chamber’s job board connects employers needing help with employees in need of work
VICTORIA, B.C. – The Chamber is refocusing our Job Board to help connect current employment opportunities with workers affected by businesses that have closed in response to the shutdown of travel and the need for social distancing as mandated by government in response to the COVID-19 crisis.
“There has been a lot of attention focused on layoffs but we’re also hearing from many employers who are struggling to fill positions in their organizations,” Chamber CEO Catherine Holt said. “The Chamber continues to call on all levels of government to provide immediate relief for businesses affected during this ongoing crisis. We also will do everything we can to continue connecting people to help sustain our economy and ensure all of us can recover quickly as soon as it is possible to do so.”
Workers in the hospitality industry have many transferable skills that are in demand during these extraordinary times. We need healthy people to help keep our grocery stores and pharmacies stocked and suppled, drivers to deliver goods to customers, cleaners to ensure our care homes and hospitals are safe. We are also seeing demand for people to assist accountants and financial institutions as they themselves try to help process a huge increase to their workload.
To access the Job Board as an employer in need of employees or as a worker able to fill a need, go to VictoriaChamber.ca/jobs. At this time, employers are able to post at no charge by using the code SUPPORTYYJ.

Bill McCreadie honoured for Lifetime Achievement
VICTORIA, B.C. – Bill McCreadie — a partner at McCreadie & Tait — has been awarded the 2020 Lifetime Achievement award by The Chamber’s Board of Governors and Board of Directors.
“As a rocksteady entrepreneur, Bill McCreadie is a model for many business leaders. He has been a member of The Chamber since 1971 and has run a successful accounting practice for 50 years,” said Dan Dagg, incoming Chair of the Board of Governors. “Not one for stealing the limelight, Bill deserves recognition for volunteering behind the scenes to serve high-profile sports events and for quietly working on behalf of business in Greater Victoria.”
In 2020, McCreadie is acting as a liaison between the Canadian Olympic Association and the Japanese city of Morioka, which is hosting Canadian Olympians in training for this summer’s Tokyo Olympics. McCreadie has served as president of the Victoria-Morioka Friendship Society since 1986. In 2011, after an earthquake devastated Japan, McCreadie travelled to Morioka to present $20,900 as a show of support for our sister city.
“It occurred to me that many people in Victoria had no idea about the 30 years Bill had devoted to the sister-city friendship society or his decades of service to community organizations, including The Chamber,” said Robin Adair, the Chamber Governor who nominated McCreadie.
Victoria’s sister city relationship with Morioka began in 1985, and a number of delegations have gone back and forth between the cities since then. Last year, a group from Morioka brought 900 kilograms of sweet crisp apples to distribute for sale in Greater Victoria and on the Lower Mainland. The shipment was part of a total of six tonnes of award-winning apples the Morioka region exported to Canada, thanks to the relationship nurtured by McCreadie.
The Chamber previously announced Rahim Khudabux as The Chamber Member of the Year for 2020.

VICTORIA, B.C. – Rahim Khudabux has been named Chamber Member of the Year for 2020 by the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce.
Khudabux has been an active member of The Chamber since launching his business, Max Furniture, in 2008. He has served on The Chamber’s Board of Directors since 2018, and has held key roles on The Chamber’s Prodigy Group, Ambassador and Auction committees.
“Rahim is passionate about The Chamber and an awesome role model for other members,” says Dan Dagg, Chair of The Chamber’s Board of Directors. “He really maximizes his Chamber membership by being a positive voice at many of our events. In all of his roles, and with every interaction, he helps our members build connections and participate more meaningfully in our community. He truly deserves to be recognized as Chamber Member of the Year.”
Khudabux is well-known for his role as “Rahim the Dream” at Victoria HarbourCats games, where he hosts dance-offs with fans.
In 2019, Khudabux was a huge supporter of The Chamber. He raised almost 10 per cent of donations for the Chamber’s annual auction gala while also celebrating two major milestones. He became a father for the first time, and oversaw the expansion of his business into a much larger showroom at 3460 Quadra Street.
Khudabux attributes his early success to having a strong mentor who provided guidance, support and the occasional push to reach new heights. He now gives back as a mentor himself through the Prodigy Group’s Mentorship Program.
The Chamber Member of the Year award recognizes an individual who has served as a volunteer at The Chamber, has taken an active role with the board or committees, fosters relationships with the community and advocates on behalf of business.
In January, The Chamber will announce the winner of the Governors’ Lifetime Achievement Award, which honours a Chamber member for outstanding leadership and accomplishments over the decades.
Nominations for all 11 categories of the 2020 Greater Victoria Business Awards are open now until January. Finalists will be announced in February. For more information, go to Victoriachamber.ca/business-awards.
The 2020 Business Awards Gala will be held May 12, at the Fairmont Empress.

01/9/2019 Gordy Dodd honoured for Lifetime Achievement read more
VICTORIA, BC – Gordy Dodd — furniture store owner, philanthropist and star of his own local television commercials — has been awarded the 2019 Lifetime Achievement award by The Chamber’s Board of Governors and Board of Directors.
“Gordy’s story deserves to be told. Anyone who has spent time in our city knows who Gordy is, has seen him on TV and recognized his talent for promotion,” said Al Hasham, Chair of the Board of Governors. ”But there’s so much more to Gordy. He cares so much about his community and has taken action to improve the lives of many, many people.”
Dodd started with a small furniture store in downtown Victoria in 1977, and today Dodd’s Furniture and Mattress is the largest independent furniture retailer on Vancouver Island. In 1998, Dodd began the tradition of hosting an annual Thanksgiving dinner for people in need as a way to give back to the community. The dinners have grown to twice a year, at Thanksgiving and Christmas, and are held in Victoria, Nanaimo and Campbell River. Last year, more than 4,000 people were able to enjoy a festive meal thanks to Dodd and his team.
Dodd says he hopes his efforts inspire others to be grateful for having an opportunity to live a good life, and the chance to make a positive difference.
“Really, there are not too many homeless. We can solve this,” Dodd says. “I just want people to (think about the fact) we live in a rich country, and most people are doing pretty good. If we all just do a little bit we can solve a lot of problems.”
Since 2002, The Chamber has celebrated the successes of the Greater Victoria business community with its annual business awards.

10/29/2018 Record year for donations to Prodigy Group’s TP the Town read more
VICTORIA, BC - Thousands of rolls of toilet paper will help Greater Victoria families in need, thanks to the efforts of The Prodigy Group, a Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce committee dedicated to emerging professionals.
On Oct. 13, the Prodigy Group held its fourth annual TP the Town event with about 120 volunteers collecting 122,880 rolls of toilet paper at stations set up at Thrifty Foods, Save-on-Foods, Country Grocer and Quality Foods stores across the region.
The rolls are being donated to the Mustard Seed Foodbank, which will receive enough this year to ensure rolls can be distributed as needed throughout the year.
“The work that The Prodigy Group did to make this year happen was incredible,” says event co-founder Shaun Cerisano. “To set a record of nearly 123,000 rolls of toilet paper raised for The Mustard Seed is a feeling that I cannot put into words. It just goes to show the time and effort put into organizing this event and how wonderful all of our volunteers were.”
The Prodigy Group collected a total of about 185,000 rolls of toilet paper over the first three years of the event.
“The Chamber is very proud of the results delivered by the hard-working members of the Prodigy Group,” says Catherine Holt, CEO of The Chamber. “We’re also very grateful for the support shown by local grocers, who agreed to put toilet paper on sale and truly helped increase the level of donation that the event makes to the Mustard Seed.”
Chamber members Thrifty Foods and Quality Foods participated for the first time this year, along with ongoing Prodigy partners Save-On-Foods and Country Grocer.
“The goal of TP the Town is not just to provide toilet paper, but to provide dignity and alleviate choices that most of us never have to think twice about,” says Danielle Mulligan, chair of the Prodigy Group. “We would also like to thank our sponsors who helped make organizing this event possible — Hendra Moving, the Wilson’s Group of Companies, Monk Office Supplies, CHEK News and Robinson’s Outdoor Store — as well as all of our volunteers and donors. Without them, none of this would be possible.”

On Oct. 13, The Prodigy Group is organizing TP the Town Victoria in support
of the Mustard Seed Foodbank
VICTORIA, B.C. - Something most of us never think twice about can be a source of anxiety for people in need. Every day, mothers and fathers in Victoria are forced to decide between buying food or toilet paper for themselves and their children.
TP the Town Victoria is a unique charitable event put on by the Prodigy Group, a committee of the Board of the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce. The event, now in its fourth year, helps provide parents in need with toilet paper so they can focus their resources on feeding their families.
The Prodigy Group will collect rolls of toilet paper and donate them to the Mustard Seed Foodbank, which will distribute them throughout the year to people in need.
In the past three years, the Prodigy Group has collected more than 185,000 rolls of toilet paper. This year, the goal is to provide the Mustard Seed with a full year’s supply of toilet paper.
“Once again, we are partnering with Save-On-Foods and Country Grocer,” says Prodigy Group acting chair Danielle Fullwood. “This year, we are also very proud to announce a new partnership with Chamber members Thrifty Foods and Quality Foods. Their willingness to put toilet paper on sale on Oct. 13, exclusively for this campaign, has been crucial to our success over the years. With so many stores participating in Greater Victoria, we hope to see our biggest turnout ever.”
On Oct. 13, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., please help make this event a success by purchasing toilet paper that has been generously discounted at a participating store for this event.
The Prodigy Group will have volunteers located at the entrance to every store to say hello and accept your donation. Hendra Moving has graciously offered to pick up donated toilet paper from every store and deliver it directly to the Mustard Seed Foodbank.
To find your nearest participating location please visit our Facebook page, TP the Town Victoria.
Having 21 stores this year is an amazing feat! This also means we need more volunteers than ever to make this happen.
Volunteer shifts are:
• 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
• 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
• 1– 4 p.m.

8/21/2018 The Chamber connects Federal Finance Minister with Greater Victoria business leaders read more
VICTORIA, B.C. – Federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau visited the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce’s boardroom today to hear from regional business leaders about building a more competitive Canada.
“The Chamber was pleased to host today’s roundtable conversation with Minister Morneau about issues that affect our members’ business,” Chamber CEO Catherine Holt said. “A wide array of topics were covered. The need to attract and retain workers at all skill levels was at the top of the list for both the Minister and many business leaders.”
The Department of Finance issued a statement after today’s meeting, noting it was a part of a series the Minister is holding across the country.
“Today’s meeting is about listening. I want to hear from local business leaders, because their perspective matters,” Minister Morneau said. “Their experience will help us respond to immediate challenges as we move forward with our long-term plan to create more good, well-paying jobs, and strengthen and grow the middle class. Together, we can continue to grow our economy for the benefit of all Canadians.”
The Minister says the Canadian economy is doing well, with Canada leading the G7 in growth last year and the unemployment rate at a record low. However, Minister Morneau recognized that businesses are anxious about what the future holds. The ongoing renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement, recent tariff decisions by the United States, and the potential impact of the recent U.S. tax reform were among the issues he raised.
The meeting was another opportunity for The Chamber to connect our members with senior decision-makers at the national and provincial levels, following our luncheons this spring with B.C. Premier John Horgan and the Bank of Canada Governor Stephen S. Poloz.
