Education and Sewage (in Times Colonist and Blackpress, Letters)

January 29, 2010

News that School District 61 considered the issue of the business model for the construction of sewage treatment in the core areas of the Capital Region is curious. The School Board has no role in sewage treatment whatsoever.

Sewage treatment is a major issue for the CRD and participating municipalities. The issue of how the service will be built and managed is one that will impact on the budgets of residents and businesses alike. It is also an issue where, in order to partner with the province, a P3 is one of the business models to be considered. Taking a position against a P3 prior to investigating its viability on this project is irresponsible at best.

There are significant challenges in our education system and the School Board should focus on its areas of responsibility. School Boards must spend the valuable time and resources they have dealing with the business of the school system. The resolution regarding sewage treatment should never have made the School Board agenda.
