This week the provincial government announced that this will be the last year we Spring Ahead for Daylight Savings time. Pre-COVID, Premier John Horgan consulted the citizens of BC on making this change in coordination with our biggest trading partners along the Pacific Northwest Coastline. The change was delayed until those states were able to get federal approval. There is no expectation that those states will proceed, but Alberta may join BC in this change.
“Monday’s announcement came as a surprise to our members and comes after what felt like a rushed and limited consultation process,” said John Wilson, CEO, Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce. “For the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce, our immediate priorities are focused on rolling back the expansion of the PST, which will extend the 7% sales tax to professional services like accounting, engineering, architecture, and security.”
“While some may be relieved not to change the clocks each year, we would have liked to have seen a coordinated approach with Pacific Northwest jurisdictions to minimize any logistical challenges for cross-border trade and tourism,” he added.
