On Sunday, May 31, from 11 AM to 4:30 PM, the streets around lower Fisgard will come alive with music, movement, and storytelling for a free, family-friendly event produced by the Victoria Chinatown Museum Society.
Enjoy Lion dancing, traditional drumming, and martial arts by Wong Sheung Kung Fu Club, Chinese opera and dance by Victoria Chinese Opera Club, Chinese Dance Victoria and Happy Drum Group and live music performances spanning classical and contemporary styles, including Elvin Chang, acclaimed Canto/Mando pop artist.
Beyond the stage, Awakening Chinatown offers hands-on and interactive experiences for all ages. Try calligraphy and traditional arts, play mahjong, participate in family-friendly games, and explore delicious food from local eateries.
The popular Awakening Chinatown Scavenger Hunt also returns, inviting attendees to explore the neighbourhood in a fun and engaging way while uncovering its rich history, hidden landmarks, and cultural stories.
Set against the backdrop of North America’s most architecturally intact Chinatown, the festival is a wonderful opportunity to experience the unique character of the neighbourhood.
Whether you’re visiting for the performances, activities, food, history, or simply the atmosphere, Awakening Chinatown offers a meaningful and memorable way to connect with culture and community.
