Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce staff recently took part in pre-escalation training with Western Canada Security, gaining practical tools to recognize early warning signs of conflict and respond before situations have the opportunity to escalate.
The training focused on the importance of early intervention, situational awareness and effective communication when navigating challenging interactions. Staff learned how changes in behaviour, body language and the surrounding environment can signal that a situation may be becoming more tense.
A key component was tactical communication, including using a calm tone, active listening and appropriate verbal and non-verbal cues to help reduce tension. The training also explored the importance of maintaining a reactionary gap, a safe physical distance that provides additional time to assess a situation and respond if circumstances change.
For Chamber staff, the training provided valuable, practical knowledge that can be applied in all areas of life, both professionally and personally.
The session reinforced that creating a safer workplace starts with being prepared: recognizing potential concerns early, communicating effectively and knowing how to respond when situations become challenging.
Thank you to Western Canada Security for sharing their expertise and helping our team strengthen these important skills.
