Hazel’s Ice Cream is a local, family-owned business that started during the pandemic to give families something stress-free to do outside. Since then, they have deepened their roots in Victoria by working with and sponsoring local community groups, festivals, and farmers markets. Hazel’s has two sides to their business: retail & events in Victoria, combined with manufacturing and distribution across Canada. Their products are available in over 200 stores in BC and Alberta and they are looking to double that number by December 2027 by expanding into Quebec and Ontario. Hazel’s takes pride in being a strong example that the manufacturing sector on Vancouver Island is alive and thriving. The Blenkinsop Community Agricultural Centre (BCAC) is a privately funded, locally built community agriculture hub in Saanich that protects farmland while expanding access to local food and growing. Unlike most community gardens and similar initiatives – often funded wholly or partly by tax dollars – BCAC is created and sustained through private investment, providing a model that delivers public benefit without depending on public budgets. BCAC combines community garden plots and small farm opportunities with hands-on learning, neighbour-to-neighbour support, and strong ties to the South Island farm community. BCAC is also driving government policy change with government leaders to modernize rules that restrict private community garden/farm models, helping open the door for other communities across BC and Canada to replicate this approach.
